This morning, the kids and I were talking. We got into this conversation where I said, "Homeschool Moms can turn anything into a school lesson." Oh, I should know better, and so should my kids. Suddenly, they saw a challenge! We were soon playing: Try to Stump the Homeschool Mom. They both thought they could come up with something that I could not turn into a school lesson. That lasted at least thirty minutes, maybe longer, and neither of them could stump me. *Smile!*
This afternoon, Ellie's girls club, the "Sonshine Girls," went to take cards and cookies to a local nursing home. I was one of two moms who volunteered to help with the club leader (three moms altogether). The last room that we visited, there was a man visiting the lady in the room. We guessed that he was a son or grandson. No, he was from the Catholic Church bringing her communion. He was friendly and asked the girls (and three little brothers, including Wyatt) if they had started school. Wyatt was the quick to answer that he was homeschooled. The other little brothers chimed in that they were homeschooled; then the girls added that they were homeschooled, too. Almost our whole group is homeschooled, but there are a few from the Christian School. I don't think the man even heard that some of the girls attended the Christian School. He was already saying how great it was that they were homeschooled and that they didn't have to learn things at the public school. I always find people like that a refreshing change from those who act like homeschoolers are strange alien creatures. Though I certainly don't mind being strange or alien, I admit I'm a non-conformist. Romans 12:2 "Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is- His good, pleasing and perfect will."
A couple weeks ago, there was a festival in town and we got there late. We ended up missing out on funnel cakes. I didn't realize my kids had never had a funnel cake! Oh, how could I have deprived them of tasting a funnel cake? Well, I promised that I would make them funnel cakes, but they had to remind me. Finally, tonight, they reminded me in time. So our bedtime snack was funnel cakes! I make terrible pancakes, good waffles, and pretty good funnel cakes. They enjoyed them and so did I. I dug up a recipe from my Middle School Home Ec class. I think we have a new special occasion breakfast dish. Yum, yum.

Lost
No, not the TV show, I never watched more than one episode, and I'm not waxing philosophical. About a month ago our main computer's motherboard got fried. When my hubby and his friend put in the new motherboard, Monday night, they had to wipe the memory of the computer.
Tuesday, my usb memory stick which held pictures from the last two years died. I had backed up pictures on cd through March 2009, but my dear hubby said that was such a waste because I had them on the usb and on the computer. I had planned in the back of my mind to back them up on cd anyway, but I never did it.
I cried, and I stopped, and I cried some more. I called Thomas at work. I called the place we got the memory stick, researched online, watched youtube videos, and tested things. The light wouldn't come on the memory on any of our computers. I finally researched businesses in the area that recover lost data on computer memory things; I e-mailed one of them.
I'm not really a person with a good memory. I need to write things down. I need my memory jogged. I really need pictures.
The kids and I started a new tradition of making a Kodak picture book each year. I let them go through pictures of the past year and pick out whichever memories were their favorites and the those pictures go in the book. We should have been doing that this week.
I'm so thankful that some of the missing pictures are on this blog, and some of those memories have pictures taken by our family or friends. Some of them may be lost forever. No one else has the sweet picture of Ellie with the upside down number 6 candle on her 9th birthday, with that special smile. She was truly happy and okay with being goofy with the number 6 candle, because Mom couldn't find enough regular candles and we don't have a number 9 candle. No one else has the pictures of Ellie and her friend, Sam, doing Karaoke on her birthday. No one else has the random pictures of Wyatt when he just wanted me to take a picture...his funny hairdos, his Lego block towers that nearly reached the ceiling fan, him with his Cabbage Patch Kids and mine on his bed.
I still have a chance with the computer memory recovery people, but I am afraid that is slim. From now on, I will back up my pictures with a disk, and on a site like Wal-mart Photos, Snapfish, CVS Photo, or Kodak. And I need to blog more. Although I read about how you need to backup your blog, or you could lose those memories, too. There's another project for me.
I'm trying to thank God for what I have and remember that I can't take pictures to heaven with me. I don't need them...I want them. I was thinking how a hundred years ago, taking pictures would have been more like a once a year sort of thing...something very special and not an everyday thing like now. Even before the digital camera, I wouldn't have so readily taken pictures...not nearly as many.
The kids finished the Summer Reading Program. They've used most of their free coupons. While we've been running around, my house has been lost in the mountain of mess that happens when we are home just enough to mess things up and not clean anything up. Does anyone else understand that one? I've been cleaning like a woman nesting today...even behind the refrigerator! Not nesting though, promise, now I know part of why I cried so much on Tuesday. To top everything off, it's that time of the month.
Yesterday, when the kids and I were at my folks, my friend, Colleen, called and said she found a turtle in her back yard for Ellie. Ellie has wanted a turtle for a long time, so we headed over to pick up the turtle. Colleen and her family were going somewhere for dinner, so she didn't have time to research the turtle before she called us. When we got the turtle home, Ellie got her turtle book and we researched Jamie the turtle. She was an Ornate Box Turtle...very delicate, easily stressed, and difficult to keep alive, even for experience turtle caretakers. So, poor Ellie had a pet turtle for about an hour or two yesterday, before we took Jamie home to where she came from and set her free. My poor baby girl, she was so sad... pet turtle, found and lost.
I feel like I've lost time lately, too. Already, a new school year is upon us. My basement painting project keeps getting stalled. I haven't blogged lately, or had a chance to read any blogs that don't come into my inbox. I have a pile of books, including an e-book that a good cyber-friend of mine has written, that I'm dying to read!
Where does the time go? And here I am wanted to play the "why game". Ugh! Reminds me of a poem I wrote in High School. I think I'll look it up and post it.

Sharing a Shirt with a Spider
Tonight I continued my nearly one year project of painting the ceiling and floor of our basement. The basement houses our homeschool classroom, playroom, family room, a bathroom, and laundry room/exercise room. I had a full hour of moving furniture and prepping for painting half of the family room ceiling. I made a new playlist on the old computer (since the newer computer when ka-pooey, in Ellie's words) and set out to paint the ceiling, which is actually the floor joices.
So, I was painting along, and felt something in my shirt. At first, I thought it might be some left over insulation which I still find stuck to the ceiling after 7 years, or more, that we took the ceiling down from the basement, because we found out we had termites. We won't have a finished basement ceiling anymore, because you can't see what's going on if it's covered up. Not having a finished basement ceiling has also been good for those times that the kids have flooded the upstairs bathtub and the water leaked through to the basement.
Anyway, back to feeling something in my shirt. I ignored it for a minute, because I had the long handled paint roller in my hands and was busy with paint dripping on me (low drip ceiling paint can still drip). Then I decided it might be a bug, so I kind of squished my shirt around what every "it" was. Then I pulled the side of my shirt out the side of my overalls and found a spider. I started to throw the spider in the trash, but we do have brown recluses around these parts, so I decided to save the spider and let my hubby (brow recluse identifier expert) take a look at it.
When he looked at the spider, he did indeed identify the bad dude as a brown recluse. Uck! So I made him look me over to check for spider bites. He couldn't find any! Thank you, God!
The kids and I were reading Luke 10:19 recently: "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Wyatt asked if that meant we could really step on scorpions, and they wouldn't hurt us. I told him, that yes, I thought Jesus really meant we could step on scorpions and they wouldn't hurt us, but that He probably didn't mean for us to go test that out.
I'm not trying to test God. I know we live in a sinful world and bad things can happen. I love when God shows me He's serious about what He says. I was sharing shirt with a brown recluse spider and God let me kill the spider without it biting me. I love when things happen, and I feel God saying, "You are mine little girl." I love belonging to God.

Homeschool Fundraiser aka Dandelion Salad

Last fall, my hubby was talking about using weed killer on the lawn to get rid of the dandelions. Well, first of all I don't understand why anyone has a problem with dandelions, they're pretty and they don't kill anything or poke anyone. Secondly, I don't like pesticides and herbicides, they are not healthy for people, animals, or the environment. Thirdly, dandelions are not weeds to "get rid of", but rather herbs that God gave us for food and vitamins. Dandelion roots have more calcium than milk, dandelion leaves and flowers are full of vitamins and are great for salad making. So, I informed my husband of these things and he said he would pay me $50 if I ate a full bowl of dandelion salad. Well, I wasn't going to let that slip through my fingers. The season was too late in the year to make a salad, but he put it in writing that I had until August of 2010 to eat the salad.

Well, it just so happened that I spent more of my homeschool budget for this next year than I meant to before the big homeschool conference, so I was trying to figure out a way to put a little money back into the school budget in April. Then I remembered the dandelion salad challenge. Thomas thought that my time had already passed, but I knew I remembered the date. I had to remind him that I if I'm not absolutely sure I know something I tell him that I'm "pretty sure" or "99% sure", but I was absolutely sure. I had to find the paper though to prove to him. So after a lot of hunting and praying, I finally found the original document... and I was right.
So, the day before the homeschool conference, I went out on our six acres and gathered me a dandelion salad. Then I washed it and dried and waited till the hubby came home from work. Then I added broccoli, carrots, cheese and vinaigrette. Then I ate the whole thing. Honestly, dandelion greens taste better than plain old lettuce. My favorite salad green is still spinach, but dandelion greens are free and abundant at certain times of the year... so I might learn to like them just as much. And yes, the Academy of the Gospel added $50 to their funds. I wonder if any other homeschool moms have done similar fundraisers?

I should have closed the curtain to the patio door on the west, my squinting makes it look like the salad was painful to eat.
Oh, I did close one of the two curtians. That is much better. Last bite!

Resurrection Sunday
We should remember every day that Jesus died for us, but I do really love that we have a special day to remember and celebrate that He not only died to pay the price for our sins, but that He conquered death and rose from the grave as alive as any healthy, breathing man on earth. We have the promise of eternal life with God. The very first verse I memorized as a child was John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."
Jesus left us the gift of the Holy Spirit and a real relationship with our Creator. No longer do we have to go through a priest or a sacrifice to talk to God; we have direct communication. Not only that, we are adopted into Jesus' family, joint heirs in the Kingdom of God.
Ephesians 1: 5-7 "having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace"
This was a windy, but beautiful day. Here are some pictures of our family:

I didn't realize, until too late, that I didn't have a good picture of Ellie in her pretty, new dress. The kids both ran off, but Wyatt came back for this photo:

Wyatt and I made some candy later on:
Wyatt wanted to take a picture of the two of us when we were done making candy, so we set the camera on timer. You can see the crockpots for supper in the background. :)
Since Ellie was hanging out with Grandma Joan while we were candy making, and I didn't get a good picture of the family with her, she allowed me to take a picture while she was drawing in her "World Book".
Happy Resurrection Sunday!
Rigatoni

This is the first Easter that I can remember spending without my family (as in my Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister). This is also the first non-traditional Easter meal that we've had as a family. My mother-in-law came to visit for the weekend. My brother went riding on his motorcycle. My parents went riding on their trike. My sister, her hubby, and three girls went to Sunrise Service at their church, breakfast with his family, and then a quick visit with our folks before they went on their ride.
I stayed up late last night making muffins for breakfast at our church. Then had church services. We invited some friends and they came. Then we came home and took some pictures and put Rigatoni in the oven (I had pre-made the basics and put it in the fridge, to it just had to heat up). This is a favorite family recipe that my mother-in-law passed on to me when Thomas and I were engaged. I have altered it just a bit, but the taste still remains true.
Here's the recipe:
1 box Rigatoni noodles
2-26 oz jars of spaghetti sauce (We like traditional, but any kind will do.)
1 beer (I buy this specially for Rigatoni, because I just don't drink it. You can omit it, but I've come to like the unique flavor that it gives the dish.)
2 to 3 cups of Colby cheese
2 to 3 cups of Mozzarella cheese
Parmesan, if desired (I haven't added that in about 10 years or more)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook Rigatoni noodles to the minimum time on the box, drain.
Use a 13 x 9 inch pan.
Pour in 1 jar of sauce and add 1/4 to 1/2 of the bottle or can of beer.
Layer 1/2 of the rigatoni noodles and 1/2 of the cheeses.
Then add the next 1/2 of rigatoni noodles on to of the first cheeses, top with the 2nd bottle of sauce and the other half of the cheese.
Bake for 30 minutes.
I love to make an extra in an aluminum pan and freeze for another day. This is such a simple dish, but so yummy and filling. The whole family likes Rigatoni! We like to have Rigatoni with garlic bread and salad.
Sign of Spring

I love to see my bright yellow daffodils bloom. Then I know that Springtime is really here. I love to see the plants come back to life in Spring. I love living where we have all the seasons. I appreciate them all for different reasons. The mild weather and nature's rebirth of plants and new baby animals just puts me in such a good mood.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:"
